As I sit here reflecting on the past year, I’m struck by the profound transformation it’s brought—a year filled with exciting adventures, heartbreaking losses, and unforgettable connections. These connections have been a vital part of my journey, whether they brought joy or sorrow. It’s hard to believe how much can happen in just 12 months. Each experience, from the most mundane to the life-changing, has left its mark on me, shaping who I am today. This journey of personal growth is a testament to the transformative power of our experiences and the importance of the connections we make along the way.
A Year Anchored in Dedication
This year began with the grounding force of my daily practice at Torres Jiu-Jitsu. The gym was more than just a place to train—it was a sanctuary, a place where discipline and persistence met purpose. Each roll on the mat was a lesson in resilience, and each sparring partner was a challenge that pushed me to grow not just physically but also mentally and emotionally. The personal growth and transformation I experienced here were profound, shaping not just my physical abilities but also my character and resilience.
One of the most defining moments came when I competed in my first blue belt tournament at the Jiu-Jitsu World League in Houston, Texas. Moving up two weight classes felt like stepping into the unknown, a leap of faith into a realm where the odds were stacked against me. But as I stood on that podium with a silver medal around my neck, I realized that the real victory wasn’t the hardware—it was the courage to step into the arena and give it my all.
This year wasn’t all about physical challenges. This year marked a journey of self-discovery, and one pivotal moment was my first visit to the Houston Fine Arts Museum. From the instant I walked through its towering doors, I was captivated. The soft murmur of visitors, the echo of footsteps, and the gentle light filtering through high windows created an atmosphere of reverence. I wandered through galleries bursting with color, texture, and stories that seemed to leap from the canvas and stone. It was here I realized the incredible power of art—to connect us to our past, inspire our present, and guide us toward a more beautiful future.
But life has a way of integrating beauty with pain. When my grandfather passed away in February, it was a poignant reminder of life’s fragility. His funeral was a day steeped in emotion—not just grief but also gratitude for the legacy he left behind. Standing beside family, sharing memories, and honoring his life was a deeply emotional experience that reminded me of the importance of cherishing the people who shape us.
Marking Change in Ink and Melody
Amid this reflection, I took a bold step: starting my sleeve tattoo. The process itself was transformative. Each session felt like a chapter being added to the story I carry on my skin. Every line and shade holds meaning, a visual narrative of what I value most. From the first sketch to the final touch, the tattoo became a reflection of my journey, a reminder of the values and experiences that shape me.
Exploring New Horizons
When I think about the places I visited this year, Colorado is a highlight. It was my first time exploring the state, and I was utterly captivated by the sheer beauty of the Garden of the Gods. The towering red rock formations, seemingly from another planet, a rugged 4×4 jeep, doors stripped away, inviting the open air as you navigate through untamed landscapes. The thrill of adventure courses through every bump and turn, offering a sense of freedom like no other. Embrace the wild, as the landscape unfolds around you, revealing breathtaking views that only a daring ride can promise it left me in awe. But the trip wasn’t just about sightseeing—I also got to experience the vibrant energy of the Cool Vibes Reggae Fest to see the Movement, Elevators, Expendables, and many more. Dancing under the Colorado sky, surrounded by strangers who felt like kindred spirits, reminded us how music can unite us.
Back home in Houston, my best friend Kenji came to visit, and together, we created memories I’ll treasure forever. One of the most quintessentially Texan experiences was introducing him to Buc-ee’s. Watching his amazement at the sheer size of the store and its quirky charm was priceless. Having Brandon and Cydney join us made it even more special—a reminder that the best moments are often the simplest ones spent with those you love. We all headed to the San Marcos River and passed through Austin, Texas, for a much-needed getaway. Floating down the river, laughing under the sun, and exploring San Marco’s vibrant culture made it clear how important it is to pause and savor life’s joys.
Farewell to Familiarity
This trip came on the heels of a bittersweet milestone: the moving-away party my Torres Jiu-Jitsu family threw for me. It was an evening filled with laughter, heartfelt conversations, and an overwhelming sense of gratitude. As I watched my teammates, who had become like family, share stories and memories, I couldn’t help but feel humbled by the incredible community I had been fortunate to be part of. Each hug and farewell carried a weight that reminded me of the bonds we had forged on and off the mats, and I felt deeply appreciated.
As I prepared to leave Texas, my emotions were a tangled mix of excitement and sadness. I was eager to embrace the unknown, ready for the new adventures in Manchester. Yet, a deep appreciation for the roots I was leaving behind lingered in every moment. Texas had shaped me in countless ways, from the friendships I’d built to the lessons I’d learned through victories and defeats.
A New Chapter in New England
Moving to Manchester, New Hampshire, was both thrilling and daunting. It was my first time living in New England, and everything felt new—the architecture, the weather, even the way people spoke. But it didn’t take long for me to fall in love with the charm of this region.
One of my first adventures in New Hampshire was a trip to Acadia National Park with Brandon and Cydney. We timed our visit to coincide with the Perseid meteor shower, and it was nothing short of magical. Lying under a blanket of stars, watching meteors streak across the sky, I felt an overwhelming sense of wonder and possibility, inspiring me to embrace the new chapter in my life.
We also walked to the summit of Cadillac Mountain, shrouded in mist. The world felt ethereal for a while as if we were drifting through clouds. Then, as the fog began to lift, the view of Bar Harbor and the surrounding islands emerged, revealing a stunning panorama that took my breath away. Each moment felt like a gift as Acadia slowly unveiled its secrets to us.
Another memorable experience was hiking Mount Washington with HIKE for Mental Health. The climb was tough—rocky trails, unpredictable weather, and steep inclines tested my endurance—but reaching the summit was exhilarating. Standing at the highest peak in the Northeast, with the world stretching endlessly around me, I felt a profound sense of accomplishment. The experience was a powerful reminder of the resilience we all carry—the ability to keep going, one step at a time, even when the path feels insurmountable. Knowing that the hike supported mental health initiatives made it even more meaningful, connecting the physical challenge with a larger purpose.
Autumn Adventures and Nostalgic Reunions
Autumn in New England is a sight that defies words—a vivid masterpiece painted by nature itself. Driving along the Kancamagus Highway during peak fall foliage felt like stepping into a postcard to come to life. Every twist and turn of the road revealed mountains drenched in fiery reds, vibrant oranges, and golden yellows. The crisp air, tinged with the earthy scent of fallen leaves, heightened the magic of the journey. Stopping at scenic overlooks, I marveled at the endless forests below, a kaleidoscope of color stretching as far as the eye could see. It was a moment of pure awe, a reminder of how beautiful the world can be when we take the time to look.
In October, I took a nostalgic detour to New Jersey to reunite with old friends Jay and Heather. Together, we ventured into Double Trouble State Park, a hidden gem of towering pines, tranquil streams, and trails carpeted with fallen leaves. As we hiked, we laughed and reminisced, the years melting away with each step. It felt like picking up right where we left off—a comforting reminder of the enduring strength of true friendship. The park’s quiet beauty provided the perfect backdrop for reconnection, its serenity matching the ease of our bond.
The next leg of my journey brought me to the bustling heart of New York City, where I experienced the electrifying chaos of Times Square for the first time. The neon lights, towering screens, and ceaseless energy were overwhelming in the most exhilarating way. Amid the city’s hustle and bustle, I fulfilled a childhood dream by seeing Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway. Sitting in the theater, immersed in the magic and spectacle, I felt the wonder of my younger self come alive again.
The next day offered a contrasting slice of life: an apple-picking and corn maze adventure in the countryside. Surrounded by orchards and the golden fields, I soaked in the crisp, sunny autumn day. There was something grounding about plucking apples straight from the tree and navigating the twists and turns of the corn maze with friends, laughter echoing in the crisp air. It was the perfect balance to the high-energy whirlwind of the city, a wholesome reminder that life’s joys come in all forms.
A Taste of History and Culture
Boston was a city that swept me off my feet; its blend of history, innovation, and culture left a lasting impression on me. In one whirlwind day, I managed to pack in an array of unforgettable experiences. My first stop was Quincy Market, where the tantalizing aroma of street food mingled with the buzz of tourists and locals alike. With its cobblestone streets and lively atmosphere, the historic market offered a perfect introduction to the city. I indulged in a classic clam chowder, savoring every bite while soaking in the vibrant energy of the bustling marketplace.
Next, I headed to the Samuel Adams Brewery for an equally educational and fun tour. Learning about the brewing process and the history behind the iconic brand was fascinating, and the tasting session was a bonus. Sampling the unique flavors of their seasonal brews gave me a newfound appreciation for the craft.
Strolling along the marina was a refreshing change of pace. The shimmering water reflected the city skyline, and the gentle sea breeze carried a sense of calm amid the urban hustle. Watching the boats bob in the harbor, I felt a connection to the city’s maritime heritage—a reminder of Boston’s role as a historic port city.
One of the day’s highlights was visiting Harry Potter: The Exhibition, a magical experience that transported me straight into the wizarding world. Seeing the intricate costumes, props, and interactive displays up close was a dream come true for a lifelong fan. It was like stepping into the pages of the books and reliving the magic that shaped my childhood imagination.
To round out the day, I went to Harvard University, synonymous with academic excellence. Walking through the historic campus, I was struck by the grandeur of its architecture and the palpable sense of history that seemed to linger in the air. The ivy-covered walls, bustling students, and iconic landmarks like Harvard Yard clarified why this institution holds such a revered place worldwide.
Each stop offered a unique glimpse into Boston’s rich history and vibrant culture. From the cobblestone charm of Quincy Market to the intellectual allure of Harvard, the city revealed its multifaceted personality with every step I took. It was a day of discovery, leaving me eager to return and delve even deeper into all Boston offers.
Crossing Borders and Embracing Winter
As the year draws to a close, I embarked on a road trip through Vermont to Montreal, Canada—a journey that marked the perfect blend of scenic beauty, cultural immersion, and the magic of winter. The drive was a highlight, winding through Vermont’s rolling hills and picturesque towns. Every turn in the road revealed another stunning landscape: vibrant, snow-covered meadows stretching into the distance, small barns dotting the fields, and charming villages in the valleys. The simplicity and serenity of the Green Mountain State felt like a step into a living postcard, and I couldn’t help but take it all in as I cruised along the highway, feeling the weight of the year slip away with each crossed the border into Canada, I felt an immediate shift.
Montreal was a world unto itself, where the past and present coexist in beautiful harmony. The city’s energy was palpable as soon as I arrived, with the unique blend of French-Canadian culture giving the streets a distinctly European flair. The city’s multicultural charm was visible on every corner, from the French signage to the lively cafés and bakeries that beckoned passersby with the scent of freshly baked croissants.
Walking through the snow-dusted streets of Vieux-Montréal (Old Montreal) was like stepping back in time. The cobblestone alleys, lined with centuries-old buildings, had a timeless and magical old-world charm. The architecture, a mix of French colonial and neoclassical styles, gave the neighborhood a historic and vibrant character. Every building seemed to tell a story, from the elegant facades to the intricate ironwork on the windows and balconies. The sound of my boots crunching on the snow added to the winter atmosphere, each step a reminder of the beauty and serenity of the season.
The highlight of my exploration was visiting the Notre Dame Basilica of Montreal, an awe-inspiring landmark that left me speechless. As I stepped inside, I was immediately struck by its grandeur. The intricate woodwork, the towering columns, and the brilliant stained-glass windows—all bathed in a soft, ethereal glow from the ambient light—created an almost otherworldly experience. The golden accents, the soaring ceiling, and the deep blue tones adorned the space were a testament to the craftsmanship and devotion that went into the building of this masterpiece. It was a moment of stillness and reverence, a chance to pause and take in this sacred place’s sheer beauty and history.
The next day, I wandered to Place des Arts, where Montreal’s Christmas market added a festive touch to the city. The market was a winter wonderland—twinkling lights adorning the stalls, the aroma of roasted chestnuts and spiced wine filling the crisp air, and the cheerful hum of holiday music creating a sense of warmth despite the chill. Local artisans sold handmade goods, from intricate jewelry to cozy scarves, and I couldn’t resist picking up a few souvenirs as I soaked in the cheerful holiday spirit. The market had an infectious energy, with people laughing, shopping, and sampling holiday treats as the soft snowflakes continued to fall gently around us.
Every moment of the trip, from the scenic drive through Vermont to the magic of Montreal’s winter charm, felt like an invitation to embrace the season entirely. The crisp air, the festive atmosphere, and the sense of crossing into a new world renewed my wonder. As the year ends, I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect way to celebrate the passage of time—by crossing borders, embracing the winter chill, and exploring new corners of the world.
Looking Back with Gratitude
As I reflect on this incredible year, I’m overwhelmed by a deep sense of gratitude for every experience, every challenge, and every person who walked alongside me during this journey. It’s easy to look back on the highlights—the tournaments, the travels, the milestones—but the quiet moments in between have shaped me the most.
Each challenge I faced, whether pushing my body to its limits on the mats at Torres Jiu-Jitsu or navigating the uncertainty of moving across the country to New Hampshire, was an opportunity for growth. Every moment that stretched me and made me question my limits has ultimately been a gift. It wasn’t always easy, but it was always worth it. And each lesson, no matter how small or complex, has helped shape who I am today.
I’m also incredibly grateful for the connections I’ve made along the way—those moments of genuine human interaction that are often fleeting but leave a lasting imprint. From the shared sweat and camaraderie in the dojo to the laughter-filled moments with friends and family, these relationships have carried me through the highs and lows of the year.
The year’s travels, from the quiet serenity of Acadia National Park to the bustling streets of New York City, have given me the gift of discovery. I’ve had the privilege of exploring new places, experiencing different cultures, and gaining a deeper understanding of the world around me. Whether walking through the snow-covered streets of Montreal or hiking Mount Washington, each adventure has expanded my horizons and filled me with wonder.
Before the year ends, I’m looking forward to one final trip that will cap off this extraordinary year—a visit to Miami, Florida, to spend Christmas with family. The Florida sun’s warmth, the ocean’s sounds, and the chance to be surrounded by loved ones will be the perfect way to close this chapter. There’s something special about celebrating the holidays with family, especially after a year of change and growth. The laughter, the stories, and the shared meals will be a beautiful reminder of what truly matters.
But above all, the simple moments stand out—the quiet conversations with friends, the shared smiles with strangers, the feeling of the sun on my face after a long day of training, and the joy of sitting around a table with family, sharing stories. These moments remind me that growth doesn’t always happen in grand, dramatic ways; sometimes, it’s in the small, everyday connections that we truly find strength.
As I look back on this year, I realize how much I’ve learned—not just about the world but about myself. I’ve learned to embrace change, face challenges with resilience, and appreciate the beauty in both the extraordinary and the ordinary.
Here’s to carrying these memories into the new year, cherishing the lessons they’ve taught me, and embracing all the adventures life has to offer. The journey is never over; it’s just beginning. And I can’t wait to see where the next chapter takes me.
As always, do what you love, and do it often! Till the next adventure…
